ABSTRACT
Early identification and intervention have a significant positive effect on communication development in very young hearing-impaired children. Newborn hearing screening program is important for early identification of hearing-impaired babies and it has been successfully managed in Korea. Therefore, the age of cochlear implantation has been lowered to 12 months and aural rehabilitation process has become necessary for the infant and toddlers. The Infant-Toddler Meaningful Auditory Integration Scale (IT-MAIS) has been developed with a modification of the Meaningful Auditory Integration Scale (MAIS) to assess the child’s spontaneous responses to sound in his/her everyday environment in 2001. IT-MAIS was composed with 10 items for a structured interview assessing three main areas; 1) vocalization behavior, 2) alerting to sounds, and 3) deriving meaning from sound. Ever since IT-MAIS has been a world wide evaluation tool of the auditory behavior to the cochlear implanted children for its validity and high reliability. For this reason, the study meeting was organized to produce a verified interpretation of MAIS and IT-MAIS in Korean and design researches for international analysis and comparison. 8 audiologists and 5 speech-language therapists gathered and obtained the author’s agreement for the interpretation. After initial interpretation of the two bilingual (Korean and English) members, all the members gathered three times for appropriate interpretation with the following six principles. 1) Each item should be interpreted faithfully. 2) Description, administration, scoring, explanation of IT-MAIS could be translated freely as far as the meaning was carried appropriately. 3) Certain words should follow the same rules such as ending of the sentence and correct spelling. 4) Summary of the whole test result would be presented in front. 5) The main area of each item would be presented upper-hand of each item. 6) Completed Korean IT-MAIS, letter of agreement, evaluation recording format would be shared by the members. Reverse interpretation and fine elaborating procedure was underwent for verifying completed interpretation of IT-MAIS. Conclusively, a verified Korean IT-MAIS was presented. Suggestions from colleagues who are interested in IT-MAIS and its interpretation are welcome for fine tuning and discussion.
