ABSTRACT
Recent studies clearly have shown that standard auditory brainstem response (ABR) latency methods have provided inadequate information for detecting small intracanalicular acoustic tumors. Consequently, the standard ABR has been replaced as a diagnostic screening tool by magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) despite its high cost, limited availability, and impact on patient comfort. Therefore, a new ABR measure, the stacked derived-band ABR amplitude has been developed. This new ABR method seems successfully detects small acoustic tumors missed by standard ABR measures. After reviewing standard ABR methodlolgy, the derived narrowband ABR technique, effective stacking methodology including pros and cons, and examples of clinical application were summarized.
